Phylogeny App is a free, interactive viewer for phylogenetic trees, with nothing to install and no account needed. Load Newick, NEXUS, phyloXML, or a saved project; explore and annotate a tree; then export a figure or share an interactive view.
Phylogeny.app is the continuation of the original phylogeny.io app. It carries forward the original project's interactive tree viewing, annotation, and sharing work while updating the viewer and administration for the current site.
The rebuilt viewer
The 2.0 rebuild adds a typed tree model, safer parsing, searchable taxa, undo and redo, metadata imports, responsive controls, and client-side figure export. Open the viewer. It replaces the original application, which has been retired.
Supported formats
Open Newick (.nwk, .newick or .tree), NEXUS (.nex or .nexus), or phyloXML (.xml) trees in the rebuilt viewer. Reopen a saved Phylogeny App project to retain your styles and edits. CSV and TSV files add metadata; they do not replace the tree.
Tree, project and metadata files may be up to 10 MiB each. Full detail is recommended up to 1,000 taxa. Larger new trees open as a collapsed overview; expand individual clades to inspect detail, with every taxon retained. Saved projects keep their saved view; use Show overview if navigation feels slow. Figure exports reflect the current collapsed view.
From tree to figure
- Open a tree. Use Open or drop a file into the rebuilt viewer, or start with an example. Check the topology and taxon labels.
- Explore and annotate. Search for taxa, change the layout, collapse clades, and add labels or colours. Join CSV or TSV metadata using taxon names that match the tree.
- Save and export. Save a project to keep working later. Export SVG for editable vector artwork, PNG for a raster image, or PDF for a figure with a chosen page size.
- Share a view. Create a public link or an embed. Keep the private edit link to update it later. Shares are unlisted by default; anyone with a public link can view the tree.
